Abstract |
The Lanna region is a multi-ethnic society with a unique process of cultural assimilation. Art works unique to each ethnic group mainly stem from faith in their religions, particularly Buddhism, so that merit might be endowed to the living and the deceased. The art works are purely defined by spiritual, not material value. Whit Cloth Castle is a Lue art work based on their faith and belief in happiness in life after death. It also indicates the economic status or merit accumulation of its owner through Buddhist rituals. The castle is distinct in craftsmanship, materials used, decorations, and designs. However, due to social change, the castles no longer function as an indicator of the ethnic belief. The investigation reveals bond, beliefs, perspectives, and the craftsmanship of the Tai Lue about the castle. The art is unique to the ethnic group that is worth being preserved.
