Abstract

This research is to study the culture of the Thai Yooi in Ban Phone Phaeng focusing on the roles of the family institution and the kinship system in maintaining their ethnic identity and culture. Thai Yooi’s family unit in Ban Phon Phaeng is a large extended family due to marriage with the people in the community. For this reason, the people in the whole community are relatives. At present, the Thai Yooi community is able to develop their culture in terms of changes in occupation and economic way of life and they also get married with the people from other communities so the number of original Thai Yooi has decreased. However, The Thai Yooi maintain their Yooi language by communicating in their own language in the community. This may be the evidence for the existence of the Thai Yooi.
