Abstract |
It is found from the investigation that the shifting cultivation practices of the Karen ethnic group at Mae Long Village have changed from the past due to the amount of their land being reduced from eight to three. Instead of solely focusing on subsistence, commercial crop cultivation has been carried out. These crops include red beans, cabbages and carrots. Investment for the cultivation of these crops is relatively high because villagers have to buy seeds, fertilizers and pesticides. Debt accumulation has adversely affected their livelihood and production is not sufficient for household consumption.
