Abstract |
Silver jewelry making of the Karen at Wat Phrabat Huay Tom Village was initiated in 1980 by the Center for Hilltribe Welfare and Development and it has become an important occupation of the village. It is found from the investigation that raw materials, equipment and designs are provided to the villagers by middlemen. Indigenous designs are made to order for those interested in them. The 1980 promotion project was jointly supported by the Provincial Center for Hilltribe Development, local community development agencies, UNICEF, and the Welfare Project for Poor Children. Initially, the project had 18 members. At present, the villagers administer and manage their own occupational group without external support.
