Abstract |
It is found that most Thai young farmers were males while most Karen young farmers were females with an average age between 12 and 17 years, were single and had one to four years of membership of their youth farmers groups. Regarding their education, most Thai youths had completed secondary school education while most Karen youths had completed the four to six-year compulsory education. In tests of knowledge and understanding about the operations of the youth farmers groups, the knowledge of Thai youths was 85% and that of Karen youths was 76%. In terms of implementation of the group activities, it was 77% for Thai youths and 50% for Karen youths. Thai youth farmers’ groups had longer duration of establishment and more financial aid and had won more awards than the Karen’s groups. Problems encountered included a lack of operating capital and support from concerned agencies and discontinuation of the groups’ operations due to a lack of financial and official support.
