Abstract |
There are two types of textiles woven by the Karen ethnic group at Phu Men Bon Village: plain and with designs. Threads are spun from cotton and both chemical and natural dyes are used. Since back-strap looms are used, the width of the textile is narrow. When it is made into clothes, the whole piece is used to piece together, avoiding cutting. There are five designs in Karen textiles and the designs are used as an indicator of social status. There are two designs for sarongs: horizontal and vertical stripes. However, more young Karens wear ready-made clothes available in the market.
