Abstract |
The investigation focuses on basic and non-basic kinship terms of Muslim Thais of Malay, Cham and Persian origins. It is found that dimensions to differentiate basic kinship terms among Muslim Thais of different origins are not the same. Those of Malay origin have five dimensions, namely generation, lineage, age, sex, and prestige. Those of Cham origin have six dimensions with an addition of the patriarchal/matriarchal side. Those of Persian origin have six dimensions, namely generation, lineage, age, sex, and patriarchal/matriarchal side. For non-basic kinship terms, the three groups share the same eight dimensions: generation, lineage, age, sex, patriarchal/matriarchal side, sex of a speaker, euphemism, and new marriage. It is concluded that Muslim Thais of Malay origin maintain their traditional culture the most, whereas those of Persian origin maintain it the least.
