Abstract |
The study focuses on symbols, meanings and social functions of the Saen Nia Ta Ritual at Kram village. The purposes of the ritual are to celebrate the end of the harvest season, to worship ancestor’s spirits, and to express gratitude to ancestors. It is found from the investigation that participants attend the ritual in accordance with their traditional belief and/or trying their luck in a lottery by interpreting the medium’s verbal and non-verbal behavior. The ritual symbols express the relationship between man and supernatural powers. The social function of the ritual is to strengthen community ties among members as a means of maintaining social order.
