Abstract |
The data for this book were gathered from historical documents of various ethnic groups and from interviewing the Tai Dam ethnic group as well as from the customs and beliefs of the ethnic group from various places. The book is one of the original issues chronicling the history of the ethnic group since the 5th century. The ethnic group migrated from the central region of China to settle in the Dam and Daeng River Basins in Tonkin (p. 12). The chronicle of Muang Lai mentioned that there were Tai Dam and Tai Khao from the Dien Bien Phu region residing with the Chinese in Muang Lai, located on the western bank of Tae River in Laos (pp. 29-31). During the Indochina War, some Tai Dam fled and settled in Tonkin and Dalat in southern Vietnam. After the fall of Dian Bian Phu to the communists, some 3,000 Tai Dam residents fled to Na Ngam Village in Xieng Khouang District of Laos. When it became difficult to earn a living in Xieng Khouang, some migrated to settle in Elai Village in Vientiane. Finally, in May 1975, Tai Dam fled to Thailand as their final refuge (pp. 48-49).
