Abstract |
This research focuses on Lahu Christian narratives reflecting its own portrayal as a low class people. It is through Lahu ideas and through narratives about “Cu yi” and Lahu lands which have influenced the Lahu Christian feelings and ideas about the past, the present and the future. The negative Lahu ethnic narratives are produced by the interactions between social experiences, historical consciousness and political power between the ethnic minority groups and the ethnic majority group who are the rulers. There are many forms of the narratives and some are an affirmation the people’s social experiences and ethnic consciousness as they feel when living on the other ethnic group’s lands. The idea for the need for their own land and other discourse presents a sign of the truth in the society. A Christian church is an institute that brings values, standards and modern industrial society to the Lahu Christian and causes a change in their way of life from the traditional economic system to the modern economic system. Moreover, the Lahu Christian idea has integrated with the traditional one and it is hard to identify which is traditional and which is the new Christian one. However, the development projects of the Christian church have reduced the value of traditional ideas and brought about new production. Thus the narratives are not just story telling, but have a complicated meaning relating to the peoples feelings through the experiences and historical consciousness of each ethnic group. (p.170-175)
