Abstract

In the past the Karen people of Mae Yang Haa Village produced agricultural products in harmony with nature. They had a simple lifestyle and agricultural products consisted of the needs of the household. The people traded for necessities with their relatives and friends. Social relationships are based on kinship systems. When change agents introduced cash crops, especially strawberries, to the community, this changed the community to a cash crop system rather than a subsistence system. Modern agricultural technology was also introduced. This affected practices in the community related to agricultural production, relationships, beliefs, values, and life style. The use of modern currency became an important factor to maintain the system. Money is now necessary to maintain a stable economy. The changes in agricultural production of the Karen come from internal factors within the community such as the local ecology and knowledge passed on to the Karen people through the change agents. As for external factors, there are marketing, price guarantees, financial assistance for production from government and private sectors, and more convenient transportation for sending products to market. Changing production methods resulted in a change in social relationships among the Karen of Mae Yang Haa Village. Relationships that were previously based on mutual assistance for agricultural production changed so that each individual was responsible for his own production. Interpersonal bonds and trust between relatives and neighbors decreased. The characteristic easy going lifestyle became hurried with individuals not having time to share their lives as in the past.
