The Pwo Karen in Huayla village, Amphoe Ban Hong, Lanphun province, live an agricultural way of life and are animists as well as adopt Buddhism in their daily life. For the Pwo Karen, songs are the instrument for transmitting poems and are sung for pleasure, rituals or are related to activities such as weaving, cultivation, and funerals. Hence, the lyrics are more important than rhymes. The lyrics are composed spontaneously and are joined with the existing lyrics. The songs are mostly (and bandy) sung between men and women. They are usually free rhythm and there is no accent. The songs consist of 4 or 4 notes. However, there are radios in the village now, so the Karen also know Thai local and pop songs as well.
