Abstract |
The purpose of the ritual is to pay homage to music teachers in the fourth, sixth and twelfth lunar months at a home of a music teacher who has magic to heal sicknesses. The musical instruments used in the ritual are of two kinds: the woodwind (short and long flutes) and the percussion (bamboo poles, a wooden plank and an earthen jar). The music is divided into three parts. The first part is an overture to pay respects to music teachers and holy spirits attending the ritual. The second part is called “Phleng Phuen”, meant to ask the spirits to accept sacrificial items. The music is played several times. The last part is called “Phleng Serng” with faster rhythms and lyrics by the ritual conductor.
