Abstract |
The investigation focuses on the culture and cultural assimilation of the Kalerng ethnic group in Kurukhu Village. It is found that, in the kinship system, the oldest person or founder of the family is the most influential in decision making and the in-laws are ranked lowest in the family. Economically, the ethnic group are farmers and daily wage earners. External products are sold in village shops. The villagers are both Buddhists and animists. They conduct rituals for the appeasement of the Village Guardian in the fourth lunar month before rice planting and in the eleventh lunar month after harvest. Folk healers conduct rituals to heal sicknesses. Regarding cultural assimilation, members of the group marry people of different ethnic backgrounds and in-laws usually accept and carry out the ethnic practices. All villagers participate in the rituals for the appeasement of the Village Guardian by contributing two baht per family. They still maintain their ethnic language in the family and community domains.
