Abstract |
The thesis investigates original and newly created Khmer dances based on beliefs in Buddhism and animism as well as imitation of nature. The dances are divided into two categories: those performed at special important events and those performed during festivals. Dance postures are for both males and females in traditional dress in accompaniment with Khmer music and songs. The postures are conventional as well as newly created which imitate the gestures of humans, animals and nature. The dances are related to the social structure in terms of beliefs, rituals, faith in Buddhism, and the treatment of sickness with a known cause. They also provide entertainment and create unity in the community. Songs and postures communicate feelings and thoughts to one another. Furthermore, they are performed during the annual provincial fair to attract tourists and to contribute to the economy.
