Abstract |
There is a conflict in the role of women as the centers of faith and the guardians of religious boundaries. Both Muslim and Buddhist women carry out religious activities and practices. On the other hand, women cross religious boundaries more easily than men when it comes to inter-religious marriage and ordination. To understand this phenomenon, it’s imperative to know a unique aspect of gender relationships of southern Thais. Gender relationships of a particular gender are not based on or related to religious boundaries. Both Muslims and Buddhists share a common attitude toward gender. Women are involved in religious practice on a daily basis to maintain unblemished morality and righteousness. However, the role of maintaining religious boundary differences is expressed through “language” (tradition), defined by men. Both Muslims and Buddhists allocate stronger rituals for men in the forms of ordination for male Buddhist adults and circumcision for male Muslim adults. As for inter-religious marriage, men are stricter about religious identity than women (page 9). The case study found that regular daily religious practices for women were not exclusively carried out in the domestic arena. This is shared by both religions. In addition, women have no specific centers.
