Abstract |
Marriage ceremonies of the two ethnic groups were based on their long-practiced beliefs, customs, and traditions, believing that the ceremonies would bring about a happy married life. The characteristics and structures of the ceremonies were similar in the two ethnic groups, for instance, partner selection was based on a voluntary basis with some involvements of relatives in the final decision. The Khmer group regarded the engagement ceremony as the most important. Steps and elements of the ceremony were similar. The marriage ceremonies were based on beliefs in auspicious times, places, instruments, and steps. The difference was that a sickle was used in the Kui ceremony, whereas a limestone container and an areca cutter were used in the Khmer ceremony. Some steps of the ceremony were different, too. The Kui put the same significance on the after-the-marriage ceremonies as the main ceremony because the relatives of both sides received the same respects. On the contrary, the Khmer did not pay much attention to the after-the-marriage ceremonies, because they regarded the main ceremony as the most important.
