Abstract |
There have been rapid social changes in this agrarian Lue ethnic community, which was originally located on an ancient trade route. With better understanding, we can see the unique socio-cultural aspects of these ethnic people. Presently, they are trying to revive their traditional ethnic culture. The investigation reveals that the ethnic group has a diverse status within the various communities the upper northern region. However, they are very proud of their ethnic identity. Local people also admire their steadfast diligence. Furthermore, their representatives have been trusted to become tambon chiefs or even higher leaders of entire communities. The findings also reveal social changes of other communities in this region due to the impacts of political centralization and the capitalist economic system in the past 80 years. There are two main factors that have contributed to these changes: internal and external. The external factor is the government’s taxation system, affecting the community members and farmers in the region in general because their livelihood is based on the subsistence economic system. The internal factor is the insufficiency of land for ever increasing numbers of community members. It can be stated that community conditions from the past to the present are relatively volatile due to economic changes (pages 13, 175-180).
