Abstract |
The report focuses on the Chinese immigrants in three northern provinces, who are former Kuomintang soldiers refusing to return to Taiwan after the political change in 1949. They decided to remain and settle in the region for either political or personal reasons. They are regarded as immigrants and a minority ethnic group. They have lived in the region for over 30 years without intending to migrate to other countries. They have tried every means to become accepted in the mainstream society by accepting legal agreements or exchanges from successive governments. They have hoped to be accepted and granted Thai citizenship by those governments (pp. 77-79).
