Abstract |
The study focuses on beliefs, values, lifestyles, and relationships of the ethnic Lue residents, as well as mechanisms for the reproduction of these cultural aspects. The data were collected by interviewing key community leaders and observing cultural activities related to their beliefs, values, lifestyles, and relationships. The Lue cultural aspects are inherently related to animism. The residents worship numerous spirits and ask them to give them blessings and heal sicknesses. In addition, they are also Buddhists, believing in the Law of Actions and merit making for a better life after death. They also respect senior people, and family leaders make decisions on family issues. Reproduction of values is of four types. They include traditional dress on secular and religious festivals, ethnic language for daily communication, traditional foods, and social talks in free time. Intra-community relationships are neighborly, and relationships with nature are mutually co-existent. The relationship with supernatural powers is as with a deity. Violations would be punished. Cultural reproduction mechanisms include religious leaders, the institution of the family, formal and informal leaders, the elderly, teachers, and other interest groups within the community. Other aspects of their ethnic identity are their language, traditional dress, foods, and traditions.
