Abstract |
There are around two million Muslim in Thailand. Most of the are in 4 southern border provinces which are Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Satun and they are given rights and freedom under Thai law like other people in other religions. Thai Muslim is under the King patronage. They are also afforded and supported as general Thai and Thai government also afford and support them without discrimination. However, there are many problems related to Muslims in the southern border provinces. As for the politic, there is a movement for secession which the minority tries to resist the government’s authority and announce to set up independency in the 4 southern border provinces of Thailand. This movement needs some support of Thai Muslim in the area in order to use the differences of religions, customs and traditions as a tool. As for the economy, it is found that a main occupation of Thai Muslim in the southern border provinces is agriculture which depends on weather and market price. Their occupation is insecure due to the turmoil of the movement for secession. As for the society, it is found that Thai Muslim in the southern border provinces is misunderstood in religious aspect and they deny to study in Thai. For these reasons, Thai government focuses on solving the problems while maintaining the customs, traditions and religions. The government try to evade the policies causing the conflicts by divided the policies to be religious policy, educational policy, economic development policy and administrative policy as well as amending the laws and regulations.
