Abstract |
Concerned state agencies enforced a local policy to Srisaket province by encouraging communities to form weaving and tailoring groups, “Ebony-dyed clothing”, in order to produce goods as part of the One-Tambon One-Product (OTOP) initiative. The policy encouraged the Suay ethnic group to produce creations that showcased their ethnic identity to outsiders, and which would contribute to local economic development. Furthermore, the ethnic group has been able to maintain their ethnic identity through “the Sa Eng Dance”, which is an important ritual that is a mixture of Lao beliefs and traditions. It is also a symbol of power and their relationship with other ethnic groups in their communities.
