Abstract |
This qualitative study was based on a documentary research and field work in four ethnic villages in Khok Srisuphan district, Sakon Nakhon province. The ethnic groups in these villages are Phu Tai, Nyor, and Kaloeng, respectively. The research results revealed that the Boon Niyom Cult had established a religious capital in the province with an emphasis on mobilizing a huge amount of financial donation. This practice was in contrast with conventional cultures and beliefs of the ethnic groups in these communities. Thus, these ethnic groupsformed a network to contest for their belief space and challenge all forms of religious capital. Subsequently, they revitalized and spread their traditional social and cultural values to those within and outside of their communities. This included promotion of strong kinship, the custom of bathing Buddha images, inscription and learning of scripture, as well as establishment of folk museums, the Yao Ritual, and animistic belief. In addition to resisting the power and expansion of the cult, there was a socio-economic and political development in their multi-ethnic communities.
