Abstract |
This thesis investigated the processes of identity reconstruction and redefinition of the Yong in Lamphun and Chiang Mai provinces by applying the concepts of identity, nostalgia and invented traditions. The findings revealed that, during the past ten years, there were several groups of Yong individuals attempting to explain the concept of being Yong and to reconstruct the meaning of Yong identity. This attempt was not meant to contest, fight against or negotiate with the state policies. However, it was an identity reconstruction under the contexts of local and tourism trends that the group attempted to revitalize their ethnic culture in order to respond to local promotion and to their identity. It was found that the reconstruction was in the forms of borrowing and assimilation of cultures and beliefs with new interpretations and invention in an attempt to empower their ethnic identity, for instance, academic seminars, publication, or various cultural activities. These were attempts to present their identity and preserve their culture until they were able to use their culture as a tool to negotiate for politics and benefits of the group.
