Abstract

This thesis investigated three aspects about the Negrito: language analysis by using linguistics theories and cultural analysis by using sociological and anthropological theories. The data for the two aspects were collected from the Negrito in Phathalung, Satun and Song Khla provinces by interviewing. Literary analysis employed a literary criticism concept and the data were derived from the literature,“Ngo Pa”, written by King Rama V.
The study findings revealed that there was only the spoken form of the ethnic language. There were two types of phonemes, which were 22 consonantal phonemes and 20 vowel phonemes. Most of the words were compounds and loanwords from other languages, e.g., Malay, Thai, Chinese, and English. These loanwords had been in existence for a long time.
Culturally, the Negrito earned their living by hunting and gathering. They know how to invent weapons and to use medicinal herbs to heal sicknesses and for birth control. They led a simple isolated life without appreciating the value of money. There was a cultural assimilation with Buddhist and Muslim Thais.
Literally, the language in the literature was mostly correspondent to their present-day language. However, there were some changes according to time (p.100).
