Abstract

This investigation was concerned with problems, problem solving, and identity expression. The data were collected from two sample groups in Nakhon Nayok province, which included four Sagai migrants in anurban community and 13 individuals who were the Sagai’s communicationcounterparts from another culture. Interviews, in-depth interviews and participatory observations were used for the data collection.
The study findings revealed that communication problems depended on experience and learning of each individual. Communication problems could be solved with the collaboration between the Sagai families and their communication counterparts through various processes. They included collectively understanding each other’s culture, providing knowledge or education, using person media, mass media or contingency media, and creation of good relationships with communication counterparts.
For their identity, the ethnic group expressed their individual identity via verbal and non-verbal languages that could change with circumstances and individual relationships. It was also found that identity expression varied according to one’s own identity. That is, if one had little identity, the expression would be even more, for instance, drawing one’s portrait with curly hair or giving a television interview with pride that some group members were cast in a movie.
