Abstract |
The objective of this research was to understand the community’s changes and its adaptation to modernity and development in Huay Hom Village. It was found that development was brought into the village in 1957 by a group of missionaries and concerned state’s agencies. New knowledge and occupations were introduced to the Pga K’nyau ethnic group. These occupations slowly replaced the more traditional ones to includecoffee plantation and wool weaving. Some even turned to converting others to Christianity as an occupation. This development created a new social group called “Say Kho” or the rich. This newly rich were able to rise through social levels and took on higher roles in managing the community. In the process, they created new types of relationship with the help of employment and job creation as tools to discriminate certain groups and to provide access and benefits to others, which ultimately led to social strata in their community.
