Abstract |
This cultural and historical research examined related literature and tales from the elderly in the study area that had been passed down from generation to generation. The study focused on the migration history of the Hok Jiew Chinese, the first Chinese group to migrate to Thailand when foreigners were granted land ownership in 1930. In the initial period, the Chinese migrants encountered difficulties in life and changes of the contexts, such as, the start of WWII, political change in 1932 or the nationalist policy during the P. Phibulsongkhram government. These circumstances affected the settlement of the immigrants. The researchers also wanted to study cultural dimensions in the establishment of the community system or traditions and customs, e.g., food or rituals, which were different from other Chinese groups.
