Abstract |
The cultural change in Payang village and Pangtong village is due to the impact of nonformal education programs organized by both government and nongovernment organizations training which include interaction, learning in field and training of village leaders and elders who will be responsible to transfer the new culture. The significant change is the abandonment of opium poppy cultivation which has affected economic change with creation of new occupations such as merchants, labourers and cultivation of other crops with higher yields and profitability replacing the opium poppy. The conversion to Christianity of the Lahu Nyi in Ban Payang has affected changed ideology and rituals as well as conflicts between the traditional religion and Christianity. Furthermore, there are many changes such as acceptance of the government’s leader, the modern medical treatment and practices, increased communications with the foreigners, the adaptation of new culture and the material culture in terms of some modern facilities. The researcher also points out the cooperation of several government and nongovernment organizations. In Pangtong village, the cultural change occurred slowly and in positive direction whereas in Pangyang village, due to very limited cooperation, rapid cultural changes and conflict are found especially between religious and administrative institutions.
