Abstract |
The traditions and rituals of canal people in Ban Phaew district were divided into two main types: general traditons and rituals and those of the ethnic groups. The former included the annual tradition to pay homage to Luang Phor To at Lak Si Ratsamosorn Temple, the orchard merit-making ritual, the collective labor in grape orchards, Khao Lam merit-making ritual, and boat racing. They were based on Buddhism, animism and the canal environment. The latter were categorized as those of the Chinese, the Song and the Mon. This investigation focused on household traditions and rituals, which included weddings, funerals and ethnically unique festivals. Those of the Chinese included New Year, birth and coming-of-age. Those of the Song included traditional dress, Khon Fon Khaen, Saen Ruan and Pat Tong. Those of the Mon included traditional dress, Song Kran, spirit dance and ordination. These traditions and rituals were derived from their faith in Buddhism and animism with the purpose of teaching social members to respect and be grateful to their ancestors, leading to attempts to maintain these traditions and rituals.
