Abstract |
Modern Mon songs are found to be originated from spirit ritual songs, which were used in ancient rituals. Conventionally, these songs were performed in both religious and secular festivities. The Mons in Pathum Thani province have still maintained the spirit dance ritual with some steps being less obligated, which could result in the disappearance of this ritual in the future. Nowadays, there are only eight songs remaining that are being performed alternatively. The five-piece Mon ensemble has added the major xylophone into the traditionalensemble. The melody and patterns are a combination of the ethnic group’s and Thai melodies.
