Abstract

Ancestral spirits of the Mon are divided into three major types: coconut spirits, clothing spirits and bamboo spirits. After the Mon had migrated to the Mae Klong River Basin, they adapted the practices of their ancestral spirit worship as seen from their animistic symbols of the ethnic group in Photharam and Ban Pong districts in Rathcaburi province. For instance, the Mon at Khongkha Nua village divid their ancestral spirits into five groups, and there are two symbols in the spirit chamber: a box of cloth and a leaf-filled bamboo tube. These practices were different from those of the Mon in Myanmar and the new immigrants. Presently, the fluency in the ethnic language among younger generations has been dramatically reduced. Furthermore, a lack of knowledgeable individuals in conventions and, rituals,as well as changes due to the lifestyle from rural to an urban society are obstacles to pass on these rituals. There have been major factors affecting the processes of cultural transmission and learning in regard to worshipping their ancestral spirits.
