Abstract |
The traditional Song Kran Festival in Phra Pradaeng district was based on the belief and values of the Mon ethnic group. It is related to adherence to and maintenance of Buddhism, gradtitude to their ancestors, respect to the elderly, solidarity and unity of the community, and entertainment after a long year of hardwork. The study revealed that the festival has changed a great deal, because of changing socio-eonomic and political contexts, lack of true understanding of the festival organizers, and state policies on tourism promotion. Certain cultural aspects have begun to disappear and other traditions have been created, such as, the centipede banner parade, Miss Song Kran parade, male and female beauty contests, a parade of flower floats, and other folk plays. In the future, local administrative organizations and the community must play a major role in conserving and revitalizing the festival by providing all parties involved correct knowledge about the festivals and publicing the essence, philosophy and belief of the ethnic group for sustainable maintenance and development of the festival in the age of globalization.
