Abstract |
The Mon Spirit Dance is not only a ritual to ask for forgiveness and an expression of respect to ancestral spirits but also a reproduction of belief and maintenance of an awareness on the ethnic history from the past to the present. It reflects ritual symbolism that the ethnic group still believes in a supernatural power that plays an important role in their health and livelihood. It also indicates the relationship of relatives because the ritual requires both monetary and labor factors. If the relationship is not strong, it will be difficult to organize the ritual. The ritual further reduces tensions in the real world of the ethnic group as the ritual is embedded with entertainment. Additionally, it reflects a powerful role of women in conducting the ritual.
