Abstract |
The Bung Ka Thaew Community is different from others in that it was formed from an acculturation between Isan Thai and Vietnamese culture. Most of the residents are Roman Catholic Christians. The Vietnamese Thai residents have adapted their ethnic culture by means of cultural assimilation by speaking and studying Thai. Religiously, they have still maintained their religious practices during funerals, weddings or paying homage to their ancestral spirits. These cultural symbols are an expression to maintain their ethnic identity. However these cultural aspects are subject to change and adaptation to suit changing cultural contexts. Certain aspects of the mainstream culture have been assimilated for being accepted socially. Isan dialect and Standard Thai are used to communicate with others. Residential buildings, eating culture and dress have become similar to those in the mainstream Thai culture. Rituals and ceremonies have become simplified. Cultural assimilation in the community indicates a long co-habitation process of the villagers in this multi-cultural society.
