Abstract |
This work examined a process of Muslim community creation in the Isan plural society in the municipality of Tambon Ra Ngaeng in Sikhoraphum district, Surin province. The municipality is composed of Thais, Lao, Khmer, Chinese and Muslims of various ethnic groups. It was found that the Muslim community was created by means of collective values and faith through Islamic teachings; the roles of mosques in providing religious teachings from imams, organizing youth training and conducting religious ceremonies; and the role of Muslim graveyards that together constituted collective faith. The creation of Muslim identity included dressing religiously, using Muslim names and contacting with institutions at the community level. They also had interactions with other cultural groups in socio-economic, political, religious and cultural aspects.
