Abstract |
This work examined the background, belief system and culture of the Tai Lue ethnic group migrating to and settling in Sipsongpanna Region in China in the 14th century. After their settlement, they established Chiang Rung Dong Nang as their capital city. The ethnic group calls themselves “Khon Lue” or “Tai Lue”, while the Chinese call them “Sui Pai Yi”, meaning “forest dwellers in low-lying areas”, because their settlements are located along river banks. They also name the capital city “Cher Li” or “Chiang Lue”. The ethnic settlements are located along the Mekong River and in mountain valleys. It was hypothesized that this ethnic group was the first Tai settlers in southern China. After that, they migrated to settle in other areas and split into other Tai groups like Tai Yong and Tai Khuen in Kengtung, Myanmar.
