Abstract |
Tai Yong is a group of Tai Lue, but they call themselves “Tai Yong” or “Khon Yong” to indicate that they migrated from Yong Township, currently a district in Kengtung, the capital city of the Shan State in Myanmar. Those residing in Lamphun province migrated from Yong Township and neighboring areas. They migrated in two major periods. The first period took place in 1805. It was a forced settlement as the group became prisoners of war due to the nation-building policy of the Lanna Kingdom. Their settlements were along the Ping, Kuang and Tha rivers. The second period was from 1813 to 1852. Tai Yong ethnic group in Lamphun has still maintained their traditions and culture. Additionally, they continue to have regular contacts with those in Myanmar. Monks and novices from the Yong Township come to study at temples in Lamphun and other provinces in northern Thailand.
