This research collected data from 139 Tai Ya ethnic residents. The data were both quantitative (using a questionnaire and statistical analysis methods) and qualitative (using ethnological descriptive methods and interviews). It was found that Tai Ya or the Flowery-Belted Tai migrated from Ya Village, Moxajiang County, Xinping Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China, due mainly to political and religious reasons. The ethnic group has its own spoken language but not the written form, and the language is categorized in the Tai-Kadai Language Family. Their ethnic identity is clearly expressed through various cultural aspects, such as food, residence, healing of ailments, wicker work, and ethnic dress. From the qualitative data, it was found that most residents wanted to maintain and conserve their ethnic culture, so that future generations would take pride in their ethnicity. Therefore, the Tai Ya Association was founded to maintain their ethnic identity (pp. 111-113).
