Abstract |
This study was a survey on the literacy concept created in the Thai discourse, international contexts and anthropology theory that show the impact of the concept on the people regarded as “without-writing” in order to understand the value of a written language and literacy in the Lahu context. The author considered two different approaches. One approach regards the written language as a tool of communication which is the technology for defining and decoding meaningful information or messages. The other separates the Lahu written language as a tool, regarding the written language as a group’s possession and identifying them as those with writing and those without writing. With this investigation, it is expected to understand the apparent indelibility of the “without-writing” label (Abstract).
