Abstract |
This work investigated status, lifestyle, adaptation and problems encountered by the Silver Palaung resettling in northern Thailand, particularly at Ban Nor Lae, Pang Daeng Nok, Pang Daeng Nai and others in Chiang Mai. This Silver Palaung originated from the Shan State of Myanmar. Due to political instability and wars, they crossed the border to take refuge under the Thai King. Their first settlement was at Nor Lae village before migrating to other areas, such as, Suan Cha in Fang district; Mae Rim district; Pang Daeng Nai, Pang Daeng Nok, Huay Pong and Mae Jon in Chiang Dao district, because of the problem of and restriction on existing farmland. They still built their traditional houses, but there were no long houses like in Myanmar. They were still involved in farming, cultivating rice and corn, but unable to grow tea as their original occupation. Additionally, they had adapted for survival by being handymen, selling products to tourists and establishing homestays. Nevertheless, it is well known that most ethnic groups chose to reside in forest land. They had had problems with the state sector and were prosecuted for forest encroachment. The other important problems were their defending of rights and obtaining citizenship.
