Abstract |
This work examined the lifestyle of the Karen ethnic group in Sangkhra Buri District, Kanchanaburi Province. The investigation revealed that the ethnic group migrated and settled in the study area in the Thonburi Period due to wars in their homeland. The chronicle of the migration events was told through ethnic folksongs. Karen are a peace-loving ethnic group, earning a living by farming and being daily wage earners. The study found that the ethnic group believe in their leaders, conserve their traditions, and help one another. The study findings were incorporated in development plans of the municipality to raise the quality of their lives and to conserve their traditions and culture. Furthermore, the plans also promoted and supported learning activities of the communities by organizing vocational training programs in farming and weaving as well as traditional dress. Additionally, the plans also covered health and livelihood of the ethnic group so as to better their quality of life.
