Abstract |
This research describes the Karen and other minorities’ participation in Northern Thailand with religious movement or Khuba movement and building the sacred places to be a symbol of antithesis against the central administration, both the government and the monk organization. This Khuba movement is to build up religious places and facilities for the public. It is practiced by the Karen and other minorities who worship Khuba and it causes the expansion of this movement. There are 3 categories of the Karen identity attending this movement: 1. the Karen attended the margin of the movement; 2. the Karen attended between the boundary and the center of the movement; and 3. the Karen attended the center of the movement. Furthermore, there are 4 main elements of the coherence of the building up religious places which are: 1. these people commonly believe in the religious land as seen from the reproduction in many legends and remains of religious places which mean the sacred areas negotiating about the rituals and the practice in daily life; 2. the attendants and disciples believe that building up a new society will be real, not an imagination. It is the society in which have their own border and identity these people are a part of it; 3. the following activities causes the society be a center of cultural diversity, welldoers who are not selfish and can sacrifice themselves for peaceful society; and 4. Making merits are still in every class of people and the monks and Khuba are patronized by the people who are educated, living in the city, wealthy with the business and agriculturists and the minorities.
