Abstract

The writer compares 3 works written by Muslims and indicates that there are many problems relating to the southern border provinces which are as follow: 1.The historical background of each province is not similar. Thai historians claim that this area is Thais from the 21st century where as Malay historians claim that this area is independent and some of them sometimes depend on Thailand. This causes the local people to try to resist Thai power and influence. 2.There is a confusion between ethnicity and nationalily. Even though, the Muslims in the south accept being Thais, but in an ethnic issue, their way of life; language, traditions, and social behaviour is still tribal. 3.They are afraid that Thai culture will make the Malay culture disappear, so the Muslims try to further maintain their culture 4.There is poverty in the southern provinces. 5.The three works suggest that there are 5 problems in the south: culture; language; religion; education and poverty. The government should accept these differences, otherwise, these problems will continue.
