Abstract |
The research examined the operation methods of the Phradhammajarika Project, which proselytized Buddhism and cultivated the consciousness of being Thai among hilltribe people. The project covered the provinces in the northern region along the Thai-Burmese border. It was revealed from the findings that the operation methods included organizing Sunday Buddhist classes for hilltribe children, holding festivals on important national and Buddhist holy days, providing poor tribespeople with basic necessities and healthcare, and establishing educational training and occupational centers. For instance, a female school for hilltribes was established at Wiwekwanaram Temple and an annual mass ordination was organized to provide hilltribe novices both secular and religious education. These methods enabled the hilltribes to become good citizens as well as good Buddhists who would feel thankful to their motherland. The project had played a crucial role in cultivating a sense of Thainess in connjunction with socio-economic development of the state.
