Abstract

This thesis is aimed at investigating the world view of the“Lao Phuan” people in Ban Wat Kudeethong Village in the province of Singhburi. It is found that meanings found in both Laotian and Thai words reflect changes in significant aspects of their world view through changes in the proportion of words in “Laotian” and “Thai” songs. Words used in the “Laotian” songs are mostly Thai words because in order to co-exist with the Thai way of life, such Thai words are more realistically reflexive than “Laotian” words. The Thai contexts pertaining to the above finding are such words as place names, words for requests or taboos, daily life and etc. As time goes by, Thai words are adopted even more often to replace “Laotian” words in the lullabies while the words for traditional social contexts become replaced to a greater extent by the new ones. There are more Thai than Laotian words in the lullabies. These lullabies are characteristically forming 4 types of relationships: 1. between boys and girls in a romantic context, 2. among family members in the context of child-rearing, 3. among community members in everyday life, and 4. between man and the environment in the context of resource utilization.
