Abstract

The Phuan in Pho SI village, Tambon Bang Pla Ma, Suphanburi is differentiated from the Phuan in Muang Phuan or Chiang Khong in Laos because Muang Phuan and Chiang Khong are highland regions whereas Supahnburi is a plateau. This means that the Phuan in this village cannot maintain their traditional activities such as weaving. However the woven weaving tradition has also played an important role in the minds of the Phuan. When they scatter to other areas, it makes the Phuan battle for their livelihood with hard work. The economy gradually becomes a main factor for the Phuan’s way of life; wealth becomes more important for the Phuan; financial status becomes a device for social discrimination which is different from past times using duties to discriminate and the modern way of life is evident in the village more and more. It makes the villagers live together independently. (p. 8-10)
