Abstract |
The integration policy of the government was applied to hilltribes by accepting that hilltribes were Thai citizens who deserved socio-economic and political developments in order to enable them to adjust to mainstream society, so that they could become self-dependent with a better quality of life. The goal of the policy was to develop the hilltribes to become independent socio-economically. In general, it was found that the Public Welfare Department was successful in changing the economic patterns of many hilltribe communities. Nowadays, more hilltribe children are able to attend state-run schools. Hilltribe people have more options in their careers besides farming. This phenomenon has been a result of the implementation of the integration policy.
