Abstract |
This thesis investigated the livelihood and perspectives of the Long-Neck Karen who had become refugees in Thailand. However, they became used as a tool for provincial tourism promotion and were deprived of freedom of movement. Therefore, educated younger generations had a different perspective about wearing brass neck coils. The investigation revealed that the Karen refugees were under close supervision of concerned state agencies and business people. They received a salary for opening their villages to tourists and young generations were encouraged to wear brass neck coils for economic purposes. For younger generations, they viewed that education was a tool to escape from the control of tourism business and perceived that the coils were used as a tool to control them and to deprive them of various rights, including the right to migrate to a third country. Nowadays, more young Karen are refusing to wear neck coils.
