Abstract |
A major cause of problems for Thai Muslims in southern border provinces is apprehension of loosing religious virtue which is because of outside factors affecting Muslim communities. This leads to a self protection process in order to protect their pure religion, faith, and strictness in Islamic cultural ways of life. For this reason, acceptance of many development projects must not affect practicing Islamic ways and or being good Muslims. Adopting and transferring modern values or the government’s policy tends to be easier if it is not related to Islam. Even though, some issues are against the principles of the religion. Thai Muslims can accept them if they are reasonable. As for the modern process of transferring social characteristics, it means revealing their own selves and an acceptance of modern thought from the outside society. Therefore Muslims’ reaction to the government’s policies is not an obstacle to the operation because Subdistrict Council members are willing to adopt the policies if they are not against the principles of the religion.
